We are developing Phase 1 the Cardiff to Newport sustainable transport corridor (Newport Road corridor) which is part of a wider Newport Road corridor scheme proposal.
From North Road, the proposed phase 1 route follows:
- Boulevard De Nantes,
- Stuttgarter Strasse,
- Dumfries Place, and
- Newport Road.
You can view simplified drawings of phase 1 (PDF, 2 MB). This route will connect to other cycle routes in the future.
The proposals include:
- improved bus stops and bus infrastructure,
- a new permanent segregated cycleway to replace the current pop-up cycleway,
- improved crossing points and pedestrian facilities, and
- changes to the highway and lane allocation.
We are currently engaging on Phase 1 and would like to hear your views.

Main aspects of the proposal

This list is a summary of the features of phase 1. More information can be found in the engagement pack.
North Road and Boulevard De Nantes junction
New cycle connection will be added to the northern side of Boulevard De Nantes.
Traffic lanes will be reallocated.
Signal phasing will be changed.
New cycleway connection will be made to the current shared route on the eastern side of North Road that leads to College Road.
Kingsway and Boulevard De Nantes junction
Permanent cycle route will be added to the northern side of Boulevard De Nantes which will replace the pop-up cycle route.
Kingsway will be closed to through traffic between Boulevard De Nantes and Greyfriars Road.
Boulevard De Nantes underpass (subway) will be filled in and a new crossing provided on Boulevard De Nantes that is level with the road.
Kingsway open space
After the underpass is removed, there will be an opportunity to create a new public open space.
Plans will be developed and engaged on separately at a later date.

Boulevard De Nantes, Park Place and Stuttgarter Strasse junction
Permanent cycle route will be added to the northern side of the road, which will replace the pop-up cycle route.
Crossing points will be changed.
Traffic lanes will be reallocated.
St Andrews Crescent and Stuttgarter Strasse junction
Permanent cycle route will be added to the northern side of the road, which will replace the pop-up cycle route.
Junction will be closed to vehicles to accommodate a cycle link and improve safety.
St Andrews Lane and Stuttgarter Strasse junction
Permanent cycle route will be added to the northern side of the road, which will replace the pop-up cycle route.
Traffic signals will be introduced to help prevent conflict between vehicles and cyclists.
Dumfries Place
Permanent cycle route will be added to the eastern side of the road, which will replace the pop-up cycle route.
Bus stops that are no longer used will be removed from the eastern side.
Bus stops on the western side will be updated.
Station Terrace and Newport Road junction
Permanent cycle route will be added to the northern side of the road, which will replace the pop-up cycle route.
Junction will be improved.
The Station Terrace cycle route will connect with the new permanent cycle route.
Fitzalan Road and Newport Road junction
Permanent cycle route will be added to the northern side of the road, which will replace the pop-up cycle route.
Junction will be improved.
Newport Road, West Grove and Fitzalan Place junction
Changes will be made to the junction to facilitate the cycleway on the northern side.
Crossing points will be changed.
Traffic lanes will be reallocated.
Other aspects of the proposal
Although we are engaging on the whole of Phase 1, we will implement some sections at a later date. This is to reduce impact on the network.
The new permanent cycle route will connect to the existing pop-up cycle route for a temporary period.

Newport Road (between West Grove and Four Elms Road)
- Cycle route will remain on the northern side and made permanent.
- Bus infrastructure will be improved.
- Traffic lanes will be reallocated.
East Grove and Howard Place
- Access to Newport Road will be closed to vehicles.
- New toucan crossing will be provided with a link to Cycleway 6.
City Road, Newport Road and Glossop Road junction
- Junction alignment will be improved.
- Crossing facilities will be improved.
- Traffic lanes will be reallocated.
Wordsworth Avenue and Newport Road junction
- Left in left out vehicle turning arrangement will be reviewed to improve safety at the junction.
Oxford Lane
- One-way system will be reviewed as part of the Wordsworth Avenue access arrangements.
Piercefield Place and Newport Road junction
- Junction will be closed to vehicles.
- Modal filter will be introduced. This is road design that restricts access to certain types of vehicles. For example, allowing cycles through but not cars. This section will tie in with Phase 2 of the Newport Road corridor.
We can only deliver this phase if funds are available, and with consideration for other projects which may be getting delivered on the transportation network.
