Our responsibility for health and wellbeing in Cardiff

Wellbeing is everyone's right and everyone's responsibility. Cardiff Council is responsible for supporting and protecting the health and wellbeing of its residents. We want people in our city to live longer and be happier.

Wellbeing can be defined in relation to the different areas of a person's life, such as:

  • Physical and mental health and emotional wellbeing
  • Protection from abuse and neglect
  • Education, training and recreation
  • Domestic, family and personal relationships
  • Contribution made to society
  • Securing rights and entitlements
  • Social and economic wellbeing
  • Suitability of living accommodation

Social Services and Wellbeing (Wales) Act 2014

As a local authority we have a duty to provide our residents with:

  • Helpful information and advice, and
  • Suitable assistance as and when necessary.

As well as improving access to information and advice it is about empowering residents to take control of their own health and wellbeing. Where residents need further assistance, we must actively involve them in the design of support plans and the delivery of care services.

Dewis Cymru

The Dewis Cymru online directory has been put together to help individuals and families access the support they need more easily. The directory lists wellbeing services provided by social care, health and third sector organisations across Wales.

You can search using your postcode for services and support in your area or search for specific services.

Working in partnership

Cardiff's Well-being Plan sets out the public sector's priorities for action focussing on the areas of service delivery which fundamentally require partnership working.

Alongside its Wellbeing Objectives, the Plan includes commitments or practical steps for improving the health and wellbeing of the most vulnerable in society.

Cardiff and Vale Plan

Both Cardiff Council and the Vale of Glamorgan Council are working together to secure better joint working between local health boards, local authorities and the third sector in order to deliver services that best meet the care and support needs of the population.

Delivery of the Cardiff and Vale Area Plan is being led by the Integrated Health and Social Care Partnership under the direction of the Regional Partnership Board (RPB).
