Website upgrade on Tuesday 23 June

What we are doing to upgrade our website to improve accessibility and security for customers.

Electric vehicles

We are keen to encourage greater use of electric vehicles and are installing charging points throughout the city to support this.

We aim to provide residents and businesses with the confidence to invest in electric vehicles when they replace their cars.

Charging points in Cardiff

We have installed 18 electric vehicle charging points across:

  • Canton,
  • Cathays,
  • Penylan,
  • Plasnewydd, and
  • Riverside.

There are also many other types of charging points across the city.

How to use public charging points

The vehicle charging system we offer is managed by Evolt.

You will need:

  • A compatible plug-to-plug cable. This should be supplied with your vehicle.

  • To register on the Evolt Network app and provide your payment details.

Parking in a charging point space

You can only park in these spaces to use a charging point. We aim to make sure there is availability of these spaces.

Charging time

Full charge for an average electric vehicle takes around 4 to 6 hours.

Payment and creating an account

Find out how you can pay to use different types of charging points:

Evolt charging points

To use Evolt charging points, sign up to Evolt public charging or apply for an Evolt RFID card.

An RFID card is a physical smart card you can use to access some charging points.

Evolt charging points of 7kw and above also accept contactless payment, on a pay as you go basis.

Find out more about Evolt payment methods.

You can also contact Evolt Network support to report a problem with an Evolt charging point.

Other charging points

You can also access and use other charging points, depending on their brand. You can check these details on signage attached to a public charging point.

You can check the brand of a specific charging point on the Zap Map website.

You can then follow steps to sign up to the vehicle charging network you need.

If there is a fault with a charging point, you will need to contact the relevant provider listed on it.

Suggest a location for an on-street charging point

You can submit suggestions to us for suitable locations across the city.

Locations must:

  • have wide pavements,

  • have plenty of public parking space available, and

  • be on streets where there are no driveways, private garages or other private parking spaces.

Please note that you cannot request a charging point immediately outside a residential property.

We will review suggested locations and consult with National Grid.

Electric vehicle use in Cardiff

We are also:

  • making sure charging points are included in new developments,

  • replacing a number of our smaller fleet vehicles with electric vehicles, and

  • planning on introducing more charging points across the city, including residential areas.
