How to access adult care services

Most of us want to have control over our lives and to live as independently as possible, but sometimes we need extra support to do this.

We provide and arrange care services for adults who need support, care or protection, including people leaving hospital and carers in difficult situations. We may provide any of the following to help you live more independently:

  • information and advice.
  • supported activities in day centres and other community settings.
  • support to enable you to access training or employment.
  • short breaks for carers.
  • home adaptations or special equipment to help people with an illness or disability with their everyday activities.
  • communication equipment to monitor your safety and enable you to call for help or provide you with.
  • supported accommodation or residential or nursing home care.
  • personal care and support provided in your home.

Cardiff Council Domiciliary Services (Community Resource Team and Cardiff Supported Living) is regulated and inspected by Care Inspectorate Wales. View our inspection reports and published ratings.

Am I entitled to services?

If you are an adult with social care needs that might affect your health, safety or independence, you may need extra support. We have a duty to assess your needs and ensure they are met in a way that best suits you.

Needs can arise from:

  • physical, sensory or learning impairments or disabilities
  • age
  • chronic illness
  • mental health difficulties, including dementia or memory problems.
  • dependence on alcohol or drugs.

We will consider if you need care and support to achieve personal outcomes relating to:

  • your ability to plan or manage your personal and other daily routines
  • your ability to communicate
  • protecting you from abuse or neglect
  • your ability to be involved in work, education, learning or in leisure activities
  • your ability to take part in family or other significant personal relationships
  • your ability to develop and maintain social relationships and access the wider community
  • your ability to fulfil your caring responsibilities for a child

You may also be eligible due to different circumstances, for example if you are an unpaid carer in a difficult situation.
