UK Parliamentary Election

If you want to vote in this election, you must have already registered to vote.

​​​​​​​​The UK Parliamentary Election will take place on Thursday 4 July 202​​​4. This is also called a general election.

The election gives people the opportunity to choose their Member of Parliament (MP). An MP represents a local area (constituency) in the House of Commons for up to 5 years. 

There will be a choice of several candidates in each constituency. Some will be the local candidates for national political parties. 

The candidate that gets the most votes will become MP for their constituency. 

Who can vote?

You can vote in this election if you are registered to vote and: 

  • are a British, Irish, or qualifying Commonwealth citizen,
  • over the age of 18 on election day, 
  • live in the UK or a UK citizen living abroad who has been registered to vote in the UK in the last 15 years, and
  • are legally allowed to vote. 

Register to vote​

If you want to vote in this election, you must have already registered to vote. 

If you moved since registering to vote, you must have registered again.

The deadline to register to vote in this election was 11:59pm on Tuesday 18 June.



Voting

If you have already registered to vote, you can vote:

  • in person, 
  • by post, or 
  • by proxy. ​

You will need to vote at a specific polling station based on your address on the electoral register. Your polling station will be on your polling letter. We will send this to you before the election. 

Photo ID

You must show an accepted form of photo ID or Voter Authority Certificate (VAC) to vote in person in the UK Parliamentary election. 

The deadline to apply for a VAC in this election was 5pm on Wednesday 26 June.​




​The deadline to apply for a postal vote in this election was 5pm on Wednesday 19 June. 
The deadline to apply for a proxy vote in this election was 5pm on Wednesday 26 June.

The new constituency boundaries will be used for the first time across the UK.

​Independent candidates

On Monday 3 June at 6pm, the Electoral Commission are holding a virtual briefing session for independent candidates who are standing at the UK Parliamentary election. 

The session will focus on how to complete your nomination papers, and they will also provide some information on spending, donations and post-poll reporting.
